Our barrels are made from aged French and American oak casks that have been reclaimed from the larger casks of local Argentinean wineries. The dried oak is hand planed before it is cut into smaller staves and then hand-assembled by local coopers. It is then sanded and stained. This time-consuming process means that there is a limited monthly production of Vinocopia barrels. The barrel is a unique and genuine piece of handcrafted elegance. Vinocopia barrels are made with the best of today’s technology and old world craftsmanship. Vinocopia barrels come in three different styles to comple- ment your wine preference: • Red. The classic red wine barrel is our most popular. It pro- tects the wines from light and air for up to eight weeks. You’ll Custom Stands serve with pleasure, and enjoy all the nuances of the flavorful reds at slightly below room temperature. • Red with chiller. Most reds benefit from not being served too warm. For those who live in very warm climates, or prefer their reds a bit cooler, this barrel comes with a chiller to keep your reds at about 58o, the typical cellar temperature. Exposed for just a few minutes, the wine is enjoyed at its optimal temperature of 60-65 degrees. • White with chiller. To maximize the fruit flavors of white wines, this barrel will keep them cooled to approximately 48o, which, after a moment in the glass, brings them to an ideal drinking tem- perature of 53o. Although each barrel comes with a wooden stand, you can also choose to purchase a wrought iron stand, or a cus- tom stand. All custom stands come with a rotating base for easier access to the back panel for insert replacement. Our custom stands are handmade of steel and wrought iron by American artisans. The Wines of Argentina The first grape vines were taken to Argentina from Peru in 1556 by Catholic priest Juan Cedron. Within a few years it was clear that the elevation, climate and soils of the Northern and Middle West- ern regions were ideally suited for grape production. The early wines were of low quality and entirely consumed locally. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, waves of Euro- pean immigrants brought renewed inter- est and expertise in winemaking. When the railroad to Buenos Aires was com- pleted in 1885, winemakers realized there was an expanded market for their wines and increased production. Up until the early 1990s, Argentina produced more wine than any country outside Europe, yet exported virtually none of it.
The Regions of Our Loscano Wines We are pleased to be among the early few from outside of Argentina to recognize the remarkable qualities of the land and the grapes they produce. Our winer- ies and vineyards are located in what are acknowledged as the three very best growing regions in all of Argentina, each producing wines of distinguished charac- ter and quality. Cafayate Cafayate the Beautiful, as it is called, lies in remote Salta province in the north of Argentina. It sits in a small oasis between two rivers at the center of a large mountain valley. A circle of silent granite giants surround the valley on three sides-- 15,000 foot mountain peaks capped with snow. There are blue skies here more than 300 days of the year and the weather is essentially always the same; warm during the day, cool at night. Add the high thermal amplitude of this unique microclimate to the dry, rocky, mineral-rich soil, and you will see why Cafayate is one of the best places in the entire world to grow grapes of highly concentrated flavor for superior wine making. In this mountainous region, we take unique advantage of the area’s steep contours to further enhance our wine. Instead of using mechanical pumps, we use gravity to feed the juice of the crushed grapes to our holding tanks. This means that the freshly released juice never comes in contact with anything, light and oxygen would compromise the taste of their wine. A common practice was to float olive oil on the surface of the wine to protect it from contaminants. Since then, oak barrels have been used in cellars around the world, to not only protect and age the wine, but also make their own subtle flavor contributions. Today, the Vinocopia barrel combines this old world tradition with contemporary technology to bring you greater efficiency in delivering and serving fine wines. Our system of oak barrels with recyclable inserts has been care- fully designed to protect the wine, allow it to be transported at lower costs and served with full flavor at the correct tempera- ture, for up to eight weeks at time. By replacing glass bottles, we: • eliminate the costs of bottle production • eliminate the costs of foils, corks and labels • save 40% of the shipping weight, reducing costs and energy requirements • reduce some the 1.5 billion bottles that end up in landfills and which take 1 million years to decompose These efficiencies create a considerable savings, which allows us to bring you the highest quality wines at a much more afford- able cost. Loscano Winery “Delivering fine wines in an earth friendly and cost effective manner is the future. I believe this concept will revolutionize the wine industry, as we know it. The possibilities for wed- dings, corporate events, restaurants, cruise ships and residential applications are endless.” which could potentially impact the fla- vors. The wine always stays true to the original flavors of the grapes. Cafayate is the high altitude home of several fabulous red varietals including Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat and Cabernet Franc. Reds from this region are known to be strong and flavorful, with intense colors. Just as importantly, it is also the home of Torrontes, the original, fragrant white wine emblematic of Argentina. We grow our Torrontes grapes from elevated pergolas to protect them from the most intense sun. Cafayate continues to be the one region in the world where this aro- matic and flavorful grape reaches its finest expression. Mendoza Known as Argentina’s premiere wine- producing region, Mendoza sits in the west central part of the country, nestled against the Andes Mountains. Almost 65% of the country’s vineyard acreage is located here. The area features a high desert climate of scarce rainfall, warm dry days and cool nights. With less than eight inches of rainfall a year, most of the water comes from the pure and plentiful run-off of the Andes, redistributed by extensive irrigation. A traditional Bordeaux, Malbec grapes arrived in Argentina in the 1850s and quickly found a perfect home in Men- doza. Today the Malbec may be Argen- tina’s most famous wine export. While they have a variety of flavor profiles, depending on where they are planted, the Mendoza area is recognized as a treasured source for this desirable grape. Our Mendoza vineyard is located in Lujan de Cuyo at 3937 feet above sea lev- el. Here the combination of the elements and a loamy, stony soil produces wines of particular refinement and incomparable body. Lujan de Cuyo is part of the “first zone” of Mendoza from which come the finest Malbecs in the world as well as outstanding Cabernets. Valle de Uco To the south of Mendoza’s central region, lies the magical Valle de Uco, one of the fastest developing grape growing regions in the country. The unique combina- tion of almost 4000’ of elevation, mini- mal rainfall, broad temperature ranges and loamy, textured alluvial soil brings extraordinary color and aroma to all of its varietals. Unlike the classical old- vine Malbecs of central Mendoza, there are newer plantings in the Valle de Uco, allowing for the exploration of new flavor combinations. From vines in Tupungato, come the grapes for our Chardonnay, Malbec, Cab- ernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Reflecting the charm of the countryside, these wines show exceptional character, comfortably suited to long periods of aging in oak barrels.
