MN Disabled Veterans Property Tax ExclusionA program enacted in Minnesota in 2008 gives Honorably Discharged Veterans with a disability rating of 70% or higher, a market value exclusion of up to $300,000 for homestead property. This results in substantial saving and in some cases elimination of property taxes for these veterans. Property Tax Fact Sheet 13 on the Minnesota Department of Revenue web site gives a summary of the program. According to Property Tax Fact Sheet 13, Qualifying Veterans with a disability rating of 70% or higher get a market value exclusion of $150,000, while Qualifying Veterans who are totally disabled (100%) get a $300,000 market value exclusion. In simpler terms the market value at which their property is taxed is reduced by either $150,000 or $300,000. A property with a market value for taxes of $275,000 would either be taxed at $125,000 ($275,000- $150,000 = $125,000) in the case of a $150,000 exclusion or at $0 ($275,000 - $300,000 = $0) in the case of a $300,000 exclusion for a Totally Disable Veteran. If you know are a Qualified Disabled Veteran or know a Qualified Disabled Veteran, have them contact their county assessor’s office or County Veterans Service Officer for more information, applications and forms needed to take advantage of this program that acknowledges what these individuals sacrificed for our country.
