Since 1974 Americans have been able to invest in Real Estate within their IRA and get all of the same benefits that an IRA offers.  The way that this is done, a self directed IRA is one of the least talked about investment vehicles.  Why?  My guess is because Wall Street doesn't make any money on it, so why talk about it.  

Homes are selling at a discounted prices compared to a few short years ago and the vacancy rate for housing in Minneapolis is hovering at about 2% currently.  Rent is going up and decent places to live are being snatched up as quickly as they become available.  You can use retirement savings to generate immedate cash flow while purchasing an appreciating asset.  If an investor can put 30% down out of their IRA there are specialty investors lining up to mortgage properties and leverage your retirement savings.

The bottom line for me with buying rental properties with an IRA is that the investor retains a level of control over a tangible asset that he or she could never remotely attain in owning shares of a company or a mutual fund.
